Description

While the Yankees (70-89) tumbled to the cellar for the first time since 1912, the Orioles (97-63) benefitted from a trade for MVP, Triple Crown winner Frank Robinson (.316-49-122) as they won their first pennant since moving to Baltimore, and then swept the World Series against the Dodgers.

LA (95-67) had repeated as NL champs by surviving another dogfight with the Giants (93-68) despite the booming bats of Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, and Jim Ray Hart who hit 37, 36, and 33 home runs respectively, and the solid pitching of Juan Marichal (25-6, 2.23 ERA) and Gaylord Perry (21-8, 2.99 ERA).

But it was the Dodgers Sandy Koufax who propelled LA to first place. In his final season, he had his best year ever — topping the majors with 27 wins, 27 complete games, 317 K’s, and a paltry 1.73 ERA for 323 innings pitched. After only 12 seasons, however, an arthritic elbow would force him to retire.

In the World Series, the Dodgers were blanked a record 33 consecutive innings after scoring just two runs in game one; and they batted only .142 for all four games. Koufax made his final major league appearance in game two, and traded goose eggs with 20-year-old Jim Palmer for four innings. But six fielding errors ultimately gave the 6-0 victory to the Orioles and the loss to Koufax. Wally Bunker and Dave McNally completed the sweep, as Paul Blair and Frank Robinson won back-to-back 1-0 games with home runs.
