SherCo Classic 1961 Season (DL)

SKU: SHR-1961DL Category:

1961 was a historic season as the junior circuit expanded for the first time in its 60-year history. Washington moved to Minneapolis prior to the start of the season, which saw a new team formed in the Nation’s Capital, along with a team in Los Angeles to rival the senior circuit’s entry.

1961 also saw one of baseball’s all-time records broken on the season’s final day when New York slugger, Roger Maris, deposited a Tracy Stallard pitch into the lower right-field stands for his 61st homer of the season, breaking the 34-year-old record set by the legendary Babe Ruth. Though the baseball commissioner at that time deemed that Maris’ record would be noted with a now-infamous asterisk, baseball itself would remedy that injustice decades later to acknowledge the feat as the all-time record.

In the senior circuit, Cincinnati took the flag while New York once again took home the honors in the junior circuit. The championship was anti-climactic as the New Yorkers took the series in five games.
