Bucky. Bleeping. Dent.
Three words that haunted a generation of Boston fans as the light-hitting shortstop’s three-run homer in the one-game playoff for the East Division title in the junior circuit lifted the hated New Yorkers to the playoffs, from where they would win yet another title for Gotham.
Led during the regular season by Ron Guidry, who went 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA, New York staved off an MVP season by Boston’s Jim Rice, who became the first player in decades to amass 400 total bases. In the West, Kansas City took their third straight crown, but once again were thwarted by the Bombers from the East.
In the senior circuit, Philadelphia took their third straight East crown, but ran into another playoff disappointment, losing to Los Angeles for the second straight year. The Bums would eventually lose to New York in the Series.
