Hazeltine opened in 1962 and the first major played there was the 1966 U.S. Women’s Open. Tony Jacklin captured the U.S. Open in 1970 by 7 strokes as he was the only player to finish under par. The Women’s Open returned in 1977 with Hollis Stacy besting Nancy Lopez by 2 strokes. The two Women’s Opens had winning scores of +9 and +4 and it hasn’t been back since. Payne Stewart won the 1991 U.S. Open in a playoff with Scott Simpson at -6. Rich Beem took the 2002 PGA Championship by one stroke from Tiger Woods, who birdied the last 4 holes. Tiger took a two stroke lead into the final round in the 2009 PGA, but couldn’t hold off the streaking Y.E. Yang and finished second once again. In 2016 the United States returned to its winning ways by defeating Europe 17-11. In an ASG replay the score was tied at 8-8 after 2 days. The U.S. then prevailed in singles to capture the Cup 16-12. Course dimensions are par 72 and 7,628 yards.
