Austin Country Club (PC)
Austin Country Club was founded in 1899 by Lewis Hancock and was the first of its kind organized in Texas. The initial membership list contained most of the early pioneer families of Austin. The first clubhouse was a small two-room, frame house; the course was nine holes, and had sand greens. In 1949, needing more space, the Club moved to east Austin, where it stayed until 1984 when it moved to its present location. The current course was designed by Pete Dye, and, in Pete Dye fashion, features forced carries, uneven lies, and menacing bunkers. There are several rock walls constructed to keep the course from collapsing into the valley below. The World Golf Classic Match Play Tournament commenced using the course in 2016 to host the World Match Play Championship. The course is short by today’s standards (6625 yds) and allow for some dramatic match play risk/rewards.
