MFT Tour — Midwestern Open at Butler National

Jay HebertJay Hebert won going away and was the only golfer to post a sub par tournament score of 283 (-5).  He shot 67 on Thursday, when Butler was more giving due to no wind and softer greens, leading Dave Ragan, Lon Hinkle and Sandy Lyle by two strokes.  Butler snarled louder on Friday, but Hebert managed to card a two under 70 to sit at -7 heading into the weekend. He led Julius Boros by four strokes and led Jerry McGee, Andy Bean, Tom Watson, and Phil Rodgers by five shots.  On Saturday, Butler showed its fangs.  Only three of the golfers making the cut broke par.  Hebert wasn’t one of them.  He shot 75 (+3) but still led the pack.  Julius Boros closed a stoke to be three shots back. Tom Watson picked up a stoke and was poised at four shots off the lead.  Gary Player shot 68 and vaulted up the leaderboard to be tied with Jerry McGee to enter the final day needing to make up five strokes.  Hebert would need a solid final round, probably around par to hold on to a lead that seemed to be slipping away with names like Boros, Watson, and Player licking their chops.  Jay played well on Sunday, again breaking par with a round of 71.  The big names nipping at his heels collapsed mightily.  Boros shot 81 to finish out of the top ten.  Watson didn’t fair much better with a final round of 79. Gary Player and Jerry McGee carded 77s. Other than Herbert, the story of the day was Seve Ballesteros who shot a final day 68 to vault 21 spots up the leaderboard to finish in second place.  The third place finisher, Johnny Pott, also made a last round serge with a 73, jumping over twelve golfers. Battled a brutal Butler National, Hebert shot three of four round under par and rolled to a 10 shot win in the inaugural MFT Tour event.
