Saturday, Round 3

Course Conditions: Saturday is forecast to be much like Friday, sunny, warm, and windy out of the Northeast. The course remains hard, but the greens were well watered overnight to try to return them to normal condition. The flags are set at the “Yellow” positions.

Arnold Palmer Tops Leaderboard Heading into Sunday

Palmer shoots 68 for Two Stroke Lead Over Surging Hale Irwin and Slipping Mac O’Grady

Tommy Bolt’s well-known temper may have gotten the best of him today and possibly cost him the championship. Leading the field by two shots heading into the weekend, he ballooned to 76 today, six over to finish at at 213, three over par and five stokes off the lead.  His round seemed to turn on the seventh hole, when he rimmed out an eleven foot par putt to stay at three under. In disgust he slapped at the one foot tap in and it skidded past the hole for a double bogey. He never really recovered.  He shot s 38-38 76.  Hale Irwin started the day at two over and shot 68 to climb into a tie for second at even par with Mac O’Grady who remained in second place two strokes off the lead with a one over 71 today.  Johnny Miller and Hubie Green shot even par 70 today to stay at +1 for the tournament and now only three strokes off the lead. Paul Harney dropped a stroke to par and is also at +1 going into Sunday play. The low rounds of the day 67 (-3), were put in by Hal Sutton and Joey Sindelar who sit at +2, four strokes off the lead.

Hubie Green Stumbles and Palmer Charges for Win

Arnie Rallies on Back Nine for Win

Palmer celebrates dropping putt on 16th to seal win

Hubie Green shot 30 (-5) on the front side, including four straight birdies to take the lead, which he had stretched to two shots by the time he had completed the 11th and Palmer, two groups back, had finished the front nine, going out in 34.  Green was at minus five and Palmer was three under as was Mac O’Grady who was playing in the group between Palmer and Green. But at this point, the worm turned.  Green parred the par five 12th and O’Grady parred the 11th. Palmer dropped a 16′ birdie putt on the 10th to move into second and pull within a shot of Green. Then, Hubie Green’s putting stroke failed him. It was a tale of 7’putts.  Green missed a seven footer to save par on the 13th while Palmer holed a seven foot birdie put on the 11th. The two stroke swing gave Palmer the lead by a stroke over Green. Meanwhile,O’Grady missed a six foot birdie putt to par the 12th and how trailed Palmer by two strokes at minus three. Things got worse for Green. He three putted from 39′ for bogey on 14 and was now two strokes back. Green had birdie opportunities on three of the final four holes in his round, but couldn’t convert any of them. Palmer made regulation pars on his next four holes. As Green was missing a six foot birdie putt on the 18th, Palmer effectively shut the door by draining a 19′ birdie putt on the 16th to go up three shots with only two holes to play.  O’Grady feel out of competition for the championship with bogeys on four of his five finishing holes.  He wound up at +1 for the event in a three way tie for third with Hale Irwin and Paul Harney.

About the Author:

I'm 59, married, an avid table top game player, mostly AGS and Skeetersoft baseball. Lately my passion is ASG Golf. I'm an addict. I've started a tour and am five events into it. I was posting on the Delphi forum but will hopefully be posting event results and write ups here. I love feedback, so don't be shy to give me shout.
