“Cary was just being Cary,” #1 seed Ben Hogan said referring to #3 seed Cary Middlecoff. “You know these doctors, they think they’re superior and know everything, but, unfortunately, I’ve never met a doctor who could play golf!” Hogan was responding to Middlecoff’s pre-round ascension that he would “drill” Hogan like he “drills” teeth in his Dental Office!
So with the trash talk aside, let this Match begin! Who’s doing the “drilling?” Well Ben Hogan is as he goes 4 UP through 8 holes! Middlecoff cut it to 3 UP at the turn but Ben birdied the 11th hole with a great lagged 58 footer for eagle and he tapped it in for the birdie and the hole to regain his 4 UP advantage with 7 holes to play!
But Hogan almost let the match slip away with lost holes via bogeys on 12 & 14, and, we have a match as Ben is now 2 UP with 4 to play! The key error for Middlecoff came on the 15th green when he 3-putted from 37 feet away for a bogey 5 and a lost hole too! That put Hogan DORMIE & the par 5 507 yard 16th was HALVED with birdies to give #1 seed Ben Hogan a ticket to the FINAL FOUR as the “Good Doctor” is sent home 3 & 2 to care for his patients! Talk about getting “drilled,” Hogan never let Middlecoff grab the lead & the match was never SQUARE as “Gentleman Ben” won the 1st hole & never looked back!
#1 seed Ben Hogan awaits the winner of the #5 seed Tony Lema vs. #3 seed Jimmy Demaret match in the Gene Sarazan Bracket. Lema is DORMIE at 18-Tee so STAY TUNED … And yes, we have a #1 seed in the FINAL FOUR!
