The Mayakoba Golf Classic is played in Mexico not far from Cancun on El Cameleon Golf Club at the Mayakoba resort. While most of the top 64 golfers are being occupied in match play on Dove Mountain Ritz Carlton the rest of the craft is playing in the only south of the border PGA Tourney.
Our tourney will not dissappoint as the other PGA field (40 some golfers) gathers for the six time at this venue to contest the green lush fairways, large sand traps, and intercoatal waterways that winds throught the 6,987 yard par 71 layout. In 2006 Greg Norman was asked to design this layout for the resort that surrounds the course.
Some of the favorites to be on site are Brian Gay, past champion 2008;Spencer Levin, lost in playoff with Wagner Johnson 2011; Briny Baird; Charles Howell III; Rory Sabbatini; Micheal Thompson; are bringing there A game to compete. Course creator, Greg Norman and past champion, Fred Funk also add luster to the field.
On Thursday Shaun Micheel and Fred Funk got of to a great start threatening the low score record with 63’s which is (61). Sunghoon Kang, South Korean golfer trailed by a stroke at -7 with course designer, Greg Norman and fellow Australian Peter Lonard and late invitee Notah Begay following at -6.
The second round found our leader, Fred Funk senior golfer extend his lead to -11 and the pretenders drop by the wayside. Sunghoon Kang and Greg Norman tried to keep pace with the leader posting a tourney score of -9 and -7 respectively.
Greg Norman gained 5 strokes on Fred Funk in the Saturday round to tie Fred Funk at -12. David Duval and Rory Sabbatini for the chase at -7. In a group of five Harrison Frazar, Todd Hamilton,Lee Jansen, Notah Begay III and Stave Flesch at -6.
